Logo colour schemes
Consistency is key to a successful advertising campaign.
So a set colour scheme must be used.
However, it does not have to be a set 3 colours all the time. A variation of that colour can be used. I have started putting examples of VARIATIONS of the basic colour groups below.

JOB POTATO CONCEPT
Using facebook as a medium for people to ask Job Potato to find them a suitable job in their area.
Example
A person logs on to facebook and visits Job Potato's page.
They can write on his wall asking him to find them a job in a particular industry and location they want to work in.
I will then research jobs in that area for that industry and Job Potato then replies to them with possible jobs they could apply for.
Most importantly, Job Potato will also provide possible avenues into that industry in order to gain more work experience in that field.
Job Potato replies to the request with a list of possible jobs and a separate list of volunteering opportunities that they can apply for.
This is Job Potato and his picture will be shown on his facebook profile.
This concept may help to increase volunteering services awareness as people can get him to do the tedious job searching for them but as an added bonus, they get more information relating to volunteering.
Job Potato can be seen as an easy way for people to get information in an area of employment they are interested in.
This is a form of new media advertising that after researching, so far has not been attempted yet. Therefore it may be a good avenue to pursue in the promotion of volunteering services in a new media campaign.
Here is Job Potatoes facebook page
Another way this can be used is by making a small cartoon featuring Job Potato who explains all the benefits of volunteering; similar to an infomercial.

Guerrilla Advertising
Guerilla Advertising
I have been researching a lot into guerilla marketing recently as I think it will be a great way to promote the online video adverts.
I have been inspired by numerous different ways to creatively advertise through this method.
Examples of Guerilla marketing that have given me me inspiration:
The above video is an example of the very creative work that Tiger Beer is doing in advertising it's product. It would definitely generate curiosity.
Tiger Beer is one of the best known brands that regularly use this form of marketing. The above video shows that by simply placing stickers in spots where people will notice, this generates curiosity. It is not just placing the stickers anywhere either. The bottles are placed so that it looks like the people are drinking the beer like on windows and posters with people on them.
I plan to adopt this method using my own logo which will provide a keyword to search for in youtube. It will also be accompanied with a unique "QR Code" for use with iphones. Iphone users can scan the "QR CODE" (below) and their iphone will automatically bring up my video blog containing all of the adverts.
The above image is the actual unique code for my video blog.
These QR codes and logo will be printed out onto sticker paper and then distributed around student hotspots, bus stops, lamp posts, on the ground and just about anywhere that will be noticeable. The logo (below) will accompany QR code.
Taking further inspiration from this, I hope to be able to put the stickers on the coffee cups in the student union so that when people buy a hot beverage they will see the logo and QR code on the cup. Perhaps placing it on the bottom of the cup on the outside so that when people take a sip of their coffee, other people will notice the logo on the bottom of their cup.
These logos are initial concepts and may developed further before printing.
Other methods of guerilla advertising will be used and are explained in other posts accompanied with this one (see using outdoor projectors and my initial concepts and ideas)
Guerilla Advertising can be a very effective way to generate curiosity and leave a lasting impression.
Some examples that I thought werre very creative:

Some examples that I thought werre very creative:
Very creative and funny way to make people aware of dental insurance.
This was an ad that cost very little but generated international awareness through being reported on the news of so many different countries. The top row of notes was the only real money used all the rest was fake. However, it didnt stop people from trying to smash it open. Very effective way to demonstrate the strength of the glass since it was an ad for security glass I think it was a huge success.
This would get people talking.
Some ad campiagns focus on serious issues and can be thought provoking and powerful such as the one above.
Very effective way to demonstrate the power of their hoover.
Advertising on buses effectively can be very rewarding as can advertising at bus stops because people are waiting and bored so something interesting would catch their eye and generate interest.

Early thoughts and research (now irrelevant).
I have included this random thoughts and research page in the blog because it gives an idea of my thought processes from early on in the project.
These below techniques were taken from random websites offering advice on how to successfully promote a business.
Get your domain printed onto umbrellas and give them away in a city centre
one day when it’s raining.
www.sussexpromotions.co.uk offer such services
Forward your website to all your friends on Facebook & MySpace,
and ask them to forward it to their friends.
Only a small pass along rate can still result in sales.
Get onto all the social bookmarking sites such as Stumble Upon,
Digg, Delicious, simpy, etc and spread the word that you exist.
Try SMS advertising, it’s another cost effective route to promoting
your business, companies such as www.textmarketer.co.uk offer this service
Social bookmarking buttons are very useful. Try www.addthis.com which gives
you buttons & a list of all the main BM sites, then it’s just a matter of
going through each of them and submitting your site details. Great button
for your site as well with data options to see how many are bookmarking you.
Guerrilla Marketing is getting more popular.
Non-damaging forms of advertising are picking up lots of press,
such as those offered by SAS http://www.streetadvertisingservices.com/
Buy expired domains similar to your own that are already generating traffic,
redirect them to your own site. Such as www.expireddomains.com
Research new ideas for advertising your business & site,
try www.adcracker.com/creativeideas to get those creative juices flowing!
Offer an affiliate programme for your product or services,
there are tons of programmes out there to chose from that will get your
n/ame and products out there.
Peg your business on Google Maps, and put a description and link down
so people know what you’re all about.
Set up an eBay Shop and do a very detailed Me page – the search engines do pick these up.
Link back to your site wherever you are allowed to.
List your business in yell.com
Whilst on this topic, list in other main directories such as Thomson local,
thebestof.com and other similarly popular sites.
Try Facebook advertising, their latest offering is cheap and very targeted.
Highly recommended.
Facebook advertsing is actually a very effective method and can cost as little as a £1 a day!
It targets exactly the audience you want in the desired area you want which would provide fantastic exposure.

To really capture an audience with your message try something such as
www.itflys.co.uk – floating media products. The BMW 1 series
floating around the shopping centre is captivating.
Think about using laser shows and outdoor projectors during the winter time
as it gets dark early.
My Random Notes.
DESIGN ISSUES
VISUAL STYLE
-USE OUTDOOR PROJECTORS IN STUDENT HOTSPOTS.
-USE AFTER EFFECTS AND CINEMA 4D TO CREATE MOTION GRAPHICS.
-USE THESE TOOLS TO PROMOTE THE VIDEO ON YOUTUBE AND OTHER WEBSITES.
-MAKE THE VIDEO RELEVANT TO A WIDE RANGE OF PROFESSIONS.
The use of public advertising such as student hotspots and what media would be the most effective
to get the message across?
USING THE INTERNET TO COMMUNICATE TO STUDENTS IS PARAMOUNT TO THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PROMOTION. STUDENTS OF ANY AGE AND/OR
PROFESSION WILL HAVE DEFINITLY FAMILIARISED THEMSELVES WITH A COMPUTER AND THE INTERNET IN THIS DIGITAL AGE.
USING THE OUTDOOR PROJECTORS WILL GENERATE A CURIOSITY BECAUSE IT WILL NOT REVEAL THE REASON FOR ITS PRESENCE. THE ONLY WAY
FOR THIS REASON TO BE REVEALED IS BY SEARCHING YOUTUBE FOR A "KEYWORD". SO, SOMETHING LIKE, "YOUTUBE - VCDUNDEE" WOULD BE
PROJECTED IN STUDENT HOTSPOTS ALONG WITH SOME EYE CATCHING EFFECTS USING AFTER EFFECTS TO MAKE SURE THE MESSAGE IS SEEN.
How to use advertising and promotion to inspire?
BY USING A FAIRLY RARE TECHNIQUE IN OUTDOOR PROJECTION, THIS WOULD SPARK INTRIGUE AND WOULD
PERHAPS GIVE AN INCREASED AWARENESS AND INSIGHT INTO VOLUNTEERING AND ITS BENEFITS. MOREOVER, IF THE VIDEO CAN SHOW VALID REASONS
WHY VOLUNTEERING WOULD GREATLY BENEIFIT STUDENTS IN THEIR PURSUIT OF FUTURE EMPLOYMENT, THEN THIS CAMPAIGN CAN BE SUCCESSFUL.
POSSIBLE AVENUES OF PROMOTION
OUTDOOR PROJECTOR ON UNION WALL OR SIMILAR PLACE?
TRAILER PLAYED BEFORE FILM AT HMC CINEMA AND DCA?
USE OF VOLUNTEER LOGOS STUCK TO REVOLVING DOORS OF UNI?
OUTDOOR SECURITY LIGHT TURNED INTO A LOGO PROJECTOR?
START A FACEBOOK VCD PAGE?
RADIO?
PROJECT OUTSIDE COLLEGES?
USE WHITESPACE MONITORS?
USE WHITESPACE COMPUTER SCREENSAVERS TO PROMOTE THE YOUTUBE LINK TO THE VIDEO?
Early Infomercial thoughts.
get someone holding another person in their palm while speaking
use green screens to do this
use typography to illustrate the spoken words
make thought bubbles
have a theme tune
get an interview with volunteer centre chief
get an interview with volunteer
come up with a set of questions to ask them
possible questions
what are the main benefits of volunteering?
what are the sort of things available?
who can volunteer?
do you need experience?
can you gain employment through volunteering?
how easy is it to get into?
More Thoughts
An investigation into the design issues of developing new media branding on a
limited budget campaign
This would obviously mean that money for production of any sort would be extremely
limited with regards to advertising - posters, postcards, stickers, the use of
airtime on radios and newpapers etc since these things all cost money (print costs etc)
The aim would most likely have to be using a free source of advertising such as online networking
such as facebook, youtube, vimeo and gumtree amoungst others.
Though that is the digital side of it, using these tools are useless unless you can
make people aware of the the various links they can go to on the internet.
An even bigger challenge is making people WANT to find out about it.
CURIOSITY should perhaps then play a big part in the promotion side of this new media
element.
Bearing in mind the new media element is an animation which must, to some degree,
captivate the viewer so that they are entertained at the same time as receiving
information that is both useful and can motivate indivduals into at least considering that
the option of gaining valuable work experience is readily available.
So what would be a good a approach?
What kind of design issues do I face?
FUNDAMENTALS must be adressed.
TYPOGRAPHY - I need to think about using an appropriate font that does not seem too formal
as in my own opinion, people should not think of volunteering as something that is overly
formal and something that comes with any kind of pressure like paid employmet would as,
ultimately volunteering is about learning what the workplace is like in the area of what
you are studying.
A fontface can be a deciding factor into how any individual percieves the information they are given.
ACCESSIBILITY - people want information at their finger tips and do not
typically want to go looking for it (unless they are curious). Using promotional techiniques to do so where the
information is directly put to them is probably the best way to do this.
Other Design Issues
Audience appeal
Theme - Dont want it to feel like the audience NEEDS to consider it; rather make the audience
BELEIVE it could be considered to be an option.
Colour Schemes - Obviously make it accessible to everyone regarding colour blind users etc
Only Visual? - Should it just be an animation that is designed for those who can see? Should
it have a narrative explaing the information also in a different medium?
Motion - How will the animation flow in such a way that it will keep the audience intrigued?
Creativity - If something is seen as out of the ordinary, good or bad, it generates curiosity,
which in turn will generate awarness of any given subject that curiosity is associated to.

The Tag Tool
After a meeting with my lecturer in which we discussed the use of data projection, the Tag Tool was suggested. I had never heard of it before until then so I did some research on it.
Illuminating York 2010 feat. Jon Burgerman from iink on Vimeo.
It is like having any surface as a blank canvas.
Above is an example of what it looks like. It is compact enough to take just about anywhere.
I wish to use it in some way to generate curiosity about volunteering.
Perhaps by encouraging passers-by to draw something or write something that is related to work experience or volunteering.
This idea has to be developed further but without having used it yet, I am unaware of exactly what it is capable of or how effective it could be to my project.
I do know that you can draw with it using a tablet and animate what you draw using a control pad that is supposedly simple and easy to operate. Again, without having used it myself I will not know. I will have the opportunity to use it in the coming months though.
There is actually a local group of people in DUndee who have experience with the Tag Tool. Here is there video below:
It seems a very abstract way to get a message across and I think it could be very interesting to use inside the students union, university and the library. Even if I was to display anything that would generate curiosity or even better get other to volunteer to use it, then it would most likely become a success.
By actually just letting poeple draw what they want, I could use that as a way to say that they "volunteered" and have now gained experience from doing so. Perhaps giving a leaflet to them with the details of the online video would increase their views and also generate interest in general.

How do I research/explore ideas and my methods of how to communicate, define, interpret and experience them.
When creating/designing anything, I generally tend to use a blank canvass and let my imagination see where it takes me.
However, inspiration has to come from somewhere so I will be investigating this below.
Since my project focusses on how guerilla advertising can help promote a new media branding campaign (in this case motion graphics adverts), I will be looking at the design issues firstly, behind new media branding and then looking at techniques of guerilla advertising that may be effective in promoting it.
Ideas can come from anywhere but in particular, it is when experiencing something that you find impressive that makes you think: "I want to be able to do that!". Specifically for this project, I have been really inspired by using motion graphics as they play a massive part in advertising particularly online and on tv.
An example of internet advertising using motion graphics:
Motion graphics artists create demo reels to showcase their talents for prospective employers. This is a widespread form of advertising their skills.
Other examples of this:
An example of motion graphics in TV advertising:
This technique has become extremely popular for many of the largest brands in the television industry. Proof of this is below:
McDonald's
Volvo
*The above in particular really interests me and I hope to do something similar to this in my commercial for volunteering which will be displayed online. The use of typography is an area I have always been interested in and I will be exploring this later.
Lloyds TSB
Barclaycard
Above are just a few examples that you can find from major brands
adopting the motion graphics techniques.
Motion graphics are generally created by using 3d applications such as Maya, Cinema 4D and 3DS max and video compositing software such as the industry standard Adobe After Effects.
Exploration
I research ideas from taking in visuals. By noticing things that look good and a general curiosity of how it was achieved. Just by watching TV and exploring Youtube, I find this a very effective way to gather inspiration. This is especially true when trying to undertake research into advertising using new media.
Ideas for my own work can be taken from typography from the way it is presented but also what the words actually say must have an impact also.
For example, my current project involves finding ways to advertise using new media techniques for volunteering services.
So by taking inspiration from slogans on adverts, (I find this a good way to generate a memorable campaign) slogans should perhaps be used in my project.
Examples of slogans:
List taken from: http://www.adslogans.co.uk/hof/top10.html
"We try harder."
Avis
"Go to work on an egg."
Egg Marketing Board
"Guinness is good for you."
Guinness
"Don't be vague.
Ask for Haig."
Haig Scotch Whisky
"Happiness is a cigar
called Hamlet."
Hamlet
"Heineken refreshes the parts
other beers cannot reach."
Heineken
"Beanz Meanz Heinz."
Heinz
"It is. Are you?"
The Independent
"Just do it."
Nike
"Think small."
Volkswagen
These were the top 10 most popular slogans. I must then think of how create such a slogan to go along with my project.
Slogans that I have in mind include:
Know your mission, maintain your vision.
Get Experienced
Experience Work Experience
Create your own future
Build up some experience
Future exp!
Moving on from the words used, a commercial, it can be argued, is mostly remembered by its audio. Particularly the music.
I will be trying to find a music track that will encapsulate the adverts I create for each aspect of volunteering. It must be very catchy but not necessarily really well known.
Examples of catchy songs in adverts:
This tune is instantly recognisable as a Llyods TSB advert.
Some brands use songs that are high up in the top 40 charts to sell their products such as in this very popular cover of Elton John's great "Your Song" by Ellie Goulding. By using a song that is so popular, it can perhaps cause that popularity to become associated with the brand (John Lewis).
Another aspect to this technique which makes it very effective is that the song was released at the same time as the commercial was. This made it a mutual advertising campaign and further boosts the popularity of the advert because it is so new. If people like the song they become curious as to who the artist is and also what the name is(if not already known) and by personal experience, I want to see the advert again so I can hear the song.
The style of commercials is a very important aspect to their success.
As already shown above, the Lloyds TSB commercial in particular stands out to me as it creates a really unique visual and accompanied with the audio, makes it instantly recognisable. The way in which the artist has created the characters is pretty unique and if I was to be shown a picture of just one of the characters I would know straight away that it was Lloyds TSB. The same goes for the music.
I mentioned earlier that typography will play a big part in motion graphics adverts that I'll be creating. This is because it is an intriguing aspect of any design not just motion graphics: ANY design.
I have researched into the use of these specifically in motion graphics as that is what is relevant to my project.
Below are some examples that have inspired me to try and incorporate this technique into my designs.
This first example was the one that really inspired me. It is not that it is extremely well done, in fact the spacing between letters could be a lot better. It's the way in which it brings what Stephen Fry's words to life and gives them an extra emphasis.
It made me really listen to what he was saying because that visual aid kept my eyes busy as I was listening to what was essentially a fantastic rant about language.
Other examples:
This is another example of what I mentioned about the previous work. I really agree with one of the comments below the video on youtube that linguists and typographists should unite to create more fantastic pieces such as this.
Below is another brilliant piece from V for Vendetta.
And another...
Below: Out of my league!!
Hope I can do something as good as above eventually.
I have begun to experiment with using typography and motion graphics and an example of one of my concepts is below.
The song chosen is not yet completely decided. YouTube allows you to use songs that they have obtained copyrights for which in turn, allows uploaders to use copyright free. I want to find a song that will be completely appropriate for the projects theme which is trying to generate awareness and motivation towards volunteering.
The colour scheme is kept simple as is the use of typography in the sense that it is static type and does not move (only the camera moves during the video). This however, will be worked on to make the typography more "engaging". With regards to the colour scheme, I am trying to keep it familiar to the Volunteer Centre Dundee although their will be no affiliation with them.
I have taken videos from youtube to emphasize the words such as the two guys playing basketball and football above the word "Sport". These are only used as examples as I have not as yet gained permissions from the creators to use their works.
I will only be including work that I have obtained permissions for. If this is not possible, I will create my own videos to accompany the type.
It is only a small part (about 1 minute long so far) but I hope to finish it in time for the end of January so I can focus on the Guerilla advertising aspect of it.
Furthermore, this is just one "overview" video. I am thinking of breaking this video up into short 30 second long adverts that will focus on one word at a time. This is because I want people who are only interested in a specific subject to be able to view just that part and not have to watch the entire thing since it would be irrelevant to them.
